The Return of the Light
I learned to etch at the Royal Academy schools in London under the tutelage of Norman Ackroyd, and it is a medium to which I often return.
In the autumn of 2018, a series of my etchings, titled The Return of the Light, was displayed at the Kilmorack Gallery. More of these images can be found on my etchings page.

A Prayer for the Healing of Nations
In the summer of 2017 I had an exhibition of work at Da Gadderie in Shetland Museum and Archives, called 'A Prayer For the Healing of the Nations'.
This work explores the tensions, fault lines and connections that exist between seemingly opposing forces in a world that is held in a state of perpetual antitheses. Wild birds flying in a state of interconnected harmony are drawn next to images of human decay, bondage and death illustrating the simultaneous rotation of creation and destruction in the circle of life. The dynamics of war and peace, nature and culture, dark and light, present and eternity, physical and spiritual, life and death are wrestled with in the artist’s medium of charcoal and ink.

Japanese woodcuts
Over recent months I've been experimenting with Japanese woodcut techniques. It’s a challenging process using watercolour brushed onto the block then printed on damp Japanese paper using a baren. As the work progresses I'll upload more to the site.
Sumi ink
I've been doing lots of small (A6) drawings in Japanese sumi ink over the last few months. They're part of an ongoing series called 'Today'. I draw what I see on my daily walks around Shetland – usually birds – and I also draw whatever is going on elsewhere in the world – most often in Syria – based on photographs from news and social media sites. I like to show these two very different experiences and portrayals of the world together.
In Shetland a dove has just flown past me, while at that very moment, in Syria, Assad has dropped a barrel bomb on a school, killing and maiming innocent children. In Shetland a baby curlew appears, illuminated by the afternoon light; at the same time, ISIS executioners are beheading Christians in the desert. How do we reconcile these two experiences of living on our planet: the madness and depravity of human beings, and the peace and harmony of nature?
