Five lessons in art
1. Work hard because talent alone is not enough.
There are lots of talented people out there who do not use or develop their talent. Hard work, drive and determination are vital to the creation of art.
2. Don’t wait for the perfect set of circumstances to arise before making art because they rarely if ever exist.
The three biggest obstacles that hinder the creation of art are
3. Be truthful to your own experience of life.
As creative people we are very lucky to be able to express how we feel about the life we are living. In your creativity, try and have the courage to be as truthful as you can to your experience of life, and in doing so you may create something powerful and profound.
4. Don’t take your creativity for granted.
If you have an artistic idea express and record it as soon as you can or if you are on a creative roll make the most of it because ideas can be fleeting and creativity is usually cyclical.
5. Find your self a visual anchor.
Try and find a subject matter that you can keep referring to and falling back on to inform and enrich your visual vocabulary. At different points in your life this may change, so try not to be afraid of any new directions your creativity might be taking you, no matter how terrifying this can feel at the time.
