These photographs were taken with black and white film over a two year period from about 1986 to 1988 in various locations around the area that I grew up in. My motivation for taking them was a mixture of social commentary, documentation and experimentation with a camera. This was an era of change, with much of the heavy industry being closed and a void being created in people's lives.

The negatives lay forgotten amongst my books for over thirty years until I recently stumbled upon them and, out of curiosity, digitally scanned them. The power of some of these images has forced me to rethink my relationship to photography.
