Skootie alan is the Shetland name for the Arctic skua. They are supremely beautifull birds despite the fact that they are pirates, that rob other birds for their food. Unfortunately the shortage of sandeels has led to the near starvation of many of Shetlands breeding sea birds having a knock on effect on Skuas.
